From rocks to root access

I trained as a geologist and moved into engineering by running real systems.

I'm Mukilan M, based in Tiruchirappalli. I studied geology through three degrees: a B.Sc. at Bharathidasan University, an M.Sc. in Applied Geology at Anna University, and an M.Tech in Exploration Geosciences at IIT Kharagpur.

The geology work was already computational: inverting self-potential data, processing satellite imagery to map rock contacts, and GIS analysis to find sites for groundwater recharge. After that I worked as a GIS analyst at Trimble, mapping road networks across the US and Canada.

The servers came next. As IT administrator at Muthu Optical, a retail optical shop, I ran its back office on self-hosted Docker apps on a local Ubuntu machine. At home I built a Proxmox homelab to practise Linux. Along the way I earned the Red Hat Certified System Administrator certification.

Today I'm a Forward Deployed Engineer at Picolo AI. I sit between clients and the product: I work out what each business needs, decide what is worth building, and ship it.
